If you consider yourself a wing connoisseur, I am going to share a secret with you today about some wings you may not know about, “hidden” in a less than obvious place.
After a particularly stressful week, we sought the comfort of a meal at one of our favorite restaurants that we hadn’t recently visited. Teton Kitchen at 415 Dick Road in Depew, has been a popular destination for over a decade now. A second location opened in 2018 at 153 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo (Allentown), serving up their Thai & Japanese cuisine, Asian tapas, and sushi to the downtown crowd.
In particular, we go to Teton Kitchen for their Spicy Buffalo Ginger Wings, a dish on which we can never pass. Without question, we consider these the best alternative wings that our region has to offer. Sweet and spicy, six crisp wings arrive with a medley of vegetables. They are listed under appetizers but tend to arrive later in the meal, so plan accordingly. Note: These particular wings are only on the menu at the Depew location. On Elmwood, Teton offers their wings dressed with your choice of teriyaki, ginger, red curry, or Buffalo style.
Jeff and I love to order a bunch of plates to share and that is exactly what we did on this occasion. We started with an order of Hamachi, which Jeff was excited to find on the specials menu. Hamachi is a type of sashimi made from thinly sliced yellowtail tuna. I usually prefer sushi to sashimi but this expertly cut fish was delicate with a buttery mouth feel and really won me over. We would order again without hesitation should it be a featured special next time we visit.
Our multi-course meal did, of course, include a sushi roll. We’ve enjoyed numerous rolls at Teton Kitchen, this time trying the Beach Roll: spicy tuna with tempura shrimp, avocado, and cucumber. We were really impressed with the large cuts of tuna that topped these rolls. Although still working our way through trying the various options, I think this one was our favorite so far.
Our final choice was an order of crispy, fried calamari with a drizzle of spicy mayo. We’ve had the calamari before but it’s another dish that’s difficult not to order at Teton Kitchen. Thus far in my explorations, they serve my favorite rendition of this dish. We love the light breading and I love that the dish is all rings (although Jeff misses the tentacles). Even having ordered this dish towards the end of the day, they were clearly fried in fresh, clean oil.
In addition to appetizers, sushi, sashimi, and specials, Teton Kitchen’s menu features soup, salad, dinner options including fried rice and noodle dishes, as well as sushi, sashimi, and tempura à la carte. Vegan and gluten free options are also available. Both locations are open seven days a week and participate with third-party delivery apps, as of the writing of this post.
