Milkie's Elmwood Lounge: Entertainment, Drinks, and House-made Snacks
Live music & comedy with house-made chicken fingers & mozzarella sticks
This past weekend, I took a little trip down memory lane and met an old friend for a late lunch at an old haunt. The Elmwood Lounge or Milkie’s Elmwood Lounge (since 2012) at 522 Elmwood Avenue, has been a mainstay for live entertainment in Buffalo’s Elmwood Village for decades. Once upon a time, I was a part of that crowd during my time with Buffalo’s comedy scene.
While Milkie’s Elmwood Lounge has long been a destination for live entertainment, it wasn’t historically a destination for food. As is the case with most entertainment venues, the prior offerings were [I feel] supplementary to the entertainment. This is no longer the case at Milkie’s.
Plenty of places with “Lounge” in the name still exist today, but I don’t know that I have been anywhere that captures that retro lounge vibe quite like Milkie’s Elmwood Lounge. The venue is divided in two parts. To the right, is the bar and performance space. To the left, is the lounge area, complete with a pool table, comfy couches and chairs.
Longstanding bartender and manager, Nikki, became the new owner after Mike Milkie’s passing in 2023. While she has maintained the cherished vibe, she has really spruced up the place, including the menu.
The new menu still features classic apps like chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks, but now almost everything is house made, including the dipping sauces. Chopped cheese and chicken or chik’n sandwiches are also offered in carnivorous, vegetarian, and vegan iterations.
We sampled almost the entire first side of the menu including the newest addition, the crab rangoons. Four crispy rangoons stuffed with crab and cream cheese come paired with the house goon sauce, a dipping sauce featuring Asian favors that can also be ordered on wings.
Speaking of wings, we ordered those too—but with Carolina Gold BBQ.
Including Tuesday night karaoke and Wednesday night comedy, live entertainment can be enjoyed at Milkie’s five days a week (Tues - Sat). Other genres include poetry, burlesque, drag, and of course, music. Check out their events calendar here. Always welcoming to all folks, the off-beat, weird and/or eccentric can find a comfortable home away from home within these walls.
The visit was truly nostalgic for me. It was here, that my friend and I won a dance competition at a Tarantino-themed party. We sang karaoke there and even though it was just an open mic, one of my favorite comedy sets was performed at Milkie’s. Hours were logged on that patio, chatting with peers and other interesting characters including the late Lance Diamond, Buffalo’s famous lounge singer for which the intersection has been dubbed, “Lance Dimond Way”.
There are so many fond memories for me at this place. Which place does it for you? Go visit them if you still can.
