Date Night at Marble + Rye
Thoughtfully elevated food & drink with a chill vibe
Following a particularly long week, I found myself yearning for a night out. Jeff and I discussed the possibility of pizza for dinner, but I didn’t want an environment that was loud or bright. I wanted dim lighting, some degree of intimacy, yet an atmosphere that was casual and relaxed. Seafood options were briefly discussed, and then it clicked—the clam pizza at Marble + Rye.
I had previously visited Marble + Rye, at 112 Genesee Street in downtown Buffalo, but only for drinks. Their creative cocktail offerings and bar service had impressed me then, and I knew that the vibe would satisfy the environment I was craving. Some time ago, I had posted on social media asking for recommendations for a clam pie. Marble + Rye was suggested. While we ultimately dined somewhere else that evening, their Detroit-style clam pizza had been on my radar.
That clam pie was a work of art. Chopped clams, fresh garlic and shallots dressed with crème fraîche and a lemon, nestled into a melted cheese blend atop a thick, airy crust with a buttery crisp bottom. Detroit-style pizzas are the specialty at Marble + Rye, and we look forward to trying other varieties.
We were without reservations for this impromptu excursion and ended up dining at the bar. Here we found not only cocktails but thoughtful mocktails as well. Pictured below is the best Arnold Palmer either of us have encountered. Made with black tea and garnished the way drinks should be (even if spirit-free), the beverage was perfectly balanced and not overly sweet like others of the same name.
In addition to Detroit-style pizza, burgers, salads, and small plates round out the menu, influenced by the seasons and availability from local farms.
In several online reviews, it was stressed that one must try the crispy potatoes. So for our second plate, we ordered the cheeseburger—two smashed patties with cheese and accoutrements, served on a house-baked brioche roll, paired with those potatoes.
Understandably, that burger needed something more impressive than a handful of fries as a plate partner. Velvety inside with a crispy exterior, the perfectly salted, smashed taters were a treat on their own. Further elevated, they came accompanied by cups of crème fraîche and chimichurri. Fresh and herbaceous up front, followed by a hit of heat, I was left wondering if I have ever tasted chimichurri before. The crème fraîche was perfectly paired relief.
Our visit to Marble + Rye hit all of the notes for me. The food, the service, and the atmosphere, were exactly what I wanted that evening. More than that, it was the sum of several thoughtful elevations, the attention to detail, that made the experience so enjoyable. A house-baked brioche roll. The fresh chimichurri. A perfectly balanced Arnold Palmer garnished with fresh mint and orange peal. Indeed, it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

Hard to find a good clam pizza. Last my hubby had one was near Hartsdale North of NYC at least 14 years ago.
